I adopted J.J. on my first day volunteering at the SPCA. I was starting over - my mom had died recently, I'd moved out of my home of 40 years, and I was between jobs - so I decided to volunteer to get myself out of the house. During my shift, the volunteer coordinator asked me if I'd considered adopting, and I had, but I needed a small or medium-sized adult dog who would be good in a 1-bedroom apartment. She led me to a 5 1/2 year old beagle mix named Jabez, and that was that; he went home with me that day. Now 14 1/2, J.J. is the darling of my apartment complex and makes friends everywhere he goes.
