Ethel After I retired in June of 2023, I began boarding and walking dogs through the Rover and Wag apps. On the morning of September 27, 2023—my 58th birthday—I was out walking a dog named Cuda, enjoying what I thought was just another extraordinary morning in my new retired life. Around Memorial Day weekend in 2024, I began boarding a dog named Ethel. She boarded with me several more times over the months, until mid-November of that year. She quickly stood out as unusually well-organized, confident, and surprisingly good at managing the energy of the other dogs. On January 2, 2025, Ethel officially rehomed with me. A couple of days later, when I finally received all of her paperwork, I noticed something that stopped me cold: Ethel was born on the very same morning I was walking Cuda—my 58th birthday. Almost immediately after Ethel moved in, I noticed that boarding dogs became easier. Playtime ran on schedule. Naptime actually happened. There was less chaos, fewer negotiations, and far fewer “what just happened?” moments. It turns out Ethel is excellent at organizing the household. She is now the official dog-boarding hostess, my 50/50 business partner, and the technical advisor in charge of playtime logistics.
